ACTIVITY WITNESSED BY COLD SPOT:

Cold Spot Paranormal Research stayed at Churchill Mansion for three days...

- in the first sitting room, by the guestbook area, a cold spot seemed to move about us. A very "chilly" mass or presence drifted around the room from person to person. Odd was that whenever this chilly "mass" would come over to one of us, the temperature around the person would actually start to rise -- not drop. Even though we felt so cold that we thought at any moment we would start seeing our breath, the temperature still rose. The temperature rose from 17 degrees to 20.4 degrees in 3 and a half minutes (this is a very large room), then shot back down to 17 degrees in even less time. We don't know what to classify this, as theoretically if it is a cold spot the temperature should be getting colder -- not hotter. But this "cold" spot was only chilly to the skin and bones, yet warm to the temperature meter. We don't think we can classify this as a hot spot either, because it felt cold. If anybody can shed any light on this, please let us know. Also, during this time Sef was grabbed on the leg by an unknown presence. He also kept getting EMF spikes.

- we were all in the main floor sitting room and heard a bang come from Room 1 above us. There was nobody upstairs, neither could we see that anything fell.

- another day, Michelle was in the upstairs hallway in front of the door for Room 2, and she heard heavy footsteps coming from Room 1. On inspection there was nobody in the room. Not to mention that Room 1 was locked, and Michelle had the key and she just left the room to go into the hallway just seconds before. Just before this happened she felt a chilly presence enter the hallway.

- Sef was sitting in the leather chair in the sitting room nearest the main entrance, and an unknown presence "reached in through his chest and squeezed his lung". We heard him moaning in pain, and saw him wriggling in his chair. He was in alot of pain and couldn't talk when it started to happen. It took a few days until the pain completely subsided.

- an unseen force grabbed Michelle's leg when she was in Room 1

- strangely, flies seemed to be attracted to, and limited to, only Room 1 and the attic. No matter what we did, the flies would just keep coming. Michelle stayed in Room 1 (Lottie's room) and couldn't figure out how they kept getting in. Then, on the last day when we all got into the car to depart, here in the car comes a huge fly seemingly attempting to hitch a ride. "It felt very intrusive" Steve said about the fly. Odd? Maybe, maybe not. You decide..

- adding to the allure of this house, all the eyes in the pictures seem to follow you. Even the ceramic owl's eyes in front of the Widow's Walk seem to be eyeing the hallway area around there. As well as the house appeared to "eat sound", it was as if a "cone of silence" were put around you. One of those things, you just have to go there to experience it for yourself.

REPORTS FROM GUESTS AT THE MANSION:

- a criminology student couldn't find her key to Room 3.
When she returned later that day the key was sitting on her pillow.

- "My girlfriend and I went there and took some pictures and
some eerie things turned out. Like one picture I took was
in the middle of the day and when I saw the picture the
surroundings were nightime. And when we tried to open the
door to the Widow's Walk it was sealed tight. But
then we went downstairs for not even five minutes and
when we came back up the door was wide open and a purple
gown was lying in front."

- "Had to stay at Churchill Mansion and didn't rest
very well, only to learn the next day that it has been
reported to be haunted."

"Last spring I was staying at the Churchill Mansion Country Inn. One morning I decided to drink my coffee up in the Widow's Walk to take in the view on a very lovely day. While I was up there I felt like I was not alone, but did not see anything. After coffee I decided to take a walk to see the neighbourhood. The entire trip I kept feeling like I was being followed or watched. I thought this was because of the houses I was walking past. Most likely the locals watching this stranger wondering around. I came to a small cemetery, and since I like looking at the old stones and carvings I went in. Almost all the stones there were Churchill family grave markers. While I was walking among the stones I kept thinking I saw an elderly man with white hair, following me along the rows. Later when I returned to the Inn I mentioned what happened to me to the innkeeper Bob Benson, he told me an interesting story about the original owners of the old mansion.

The mansion was built by Aaron Churchill back at the turn of the 20th century as a summer home for his family. When he lived there he would take his morning coffee on the Widows Walk, then walk to the cemetery to visit his mothers grave. He too is buried there. There have been many sightings of Aaron and his family around the old mansion. Many ghost stories abound about the hauntings there. I'm not sure if they are true but I know my story is true."

"A few days ago (October 8, 2005) I had my sweet sixteen birthday party at the Churchill Mansion. I had always been interested in ghosts and the paranormal so going to the Churchill Mansion was the best idea for a party. I had invited 11 friends, plus my parents were there and my best friends parents also attended. It was raining cats and dogs when we arrived, and did all night. Mom went in first and then we began unloading the truck of our car with pizza, karaoke etc.. My friends began arriving shortly around 6:30-7:00.. We had supper in the sun room and when we were eating we happened to see the cat playing with a real dead mouse! yuck! Kinda funny, but fitted the atmosphere of the house, so we laughed, told stories and sang a lot of karaoke. I opened my gifts and so far nothing out of the ordinary had happened yet.

Around 9pm Bob (the owner) told us the history of the mansion and gave us a tour. We went into room 1 first and boy oh boy, as soon as I walked in there I was struck with coldness..I knew there was something wrong about this room, only to find out later it belonged to Lottie.

Bob brought us around as my friend Ashley followed with everything on video camera. After the tour we decided to see if we could contact the dead from the front living room. We shut off the lights and only put a candle on as we also had the video camera on as well (camera's setting was set on night vision). We tried talking to Aaron but we weren't getting any signs. My friends went out in the hallway and tried calling him, as they did that 3 of my other friends had to leave. So now in the room there was Kandis, Martine, Ashley (with the video camera), Courtney, Anne, Ryan and myself. We had the candle on the table and the camera on the table too, Anne, Ryan and Myself were on the couch..as we sat there in the dark Courtney watched the camera. Martine got a weird feeling and ran out of the room. Anne and Ryan started hearing voices at the same time and Courtney as she watched the camera seen a white circle (orb?) appear on top of Anne's head! Ashley grabbed the camera and questioned if it could have been the door knob, but it couldn't have because Anne was leaning on Ryan and the doorknob was quite a ways away. We kept on taping and shortly after seen another orb? around Anne's foot through the tape. Martine did not dare to step back into the room and Anne was scared to death, after a while we stopped taping.

I began watching our two full cassettes of footage yesterday and today. Today I watched the second tape ( the dark part) as Ashley goes around the room in the dark with the camera you can see the reflection through the window..but one time as she goes by the window we see three spots (orbs) which had not been there before. As I continued to watch the video tape I seen white spots flying around the room. Then as I'm watching the part where we seen an orb on top of Anne's head, Ashley grabbed the camera (in the movie) and starts screaming and BOOM...thats it. The tape is done? I was confused and checked an extra tape I had brought but nothing was on it. We had recorded more but the tape didn't have it, our footage was lost and we really don't know why. Very spooky, but we all had a great time."

Site History

This Victorian home was originally built as a summer home in 1890 by Aaron Flint Churchill. He and his wife spent six weeks each summer here along with his niece, Lottie, whom he helped raise with his wife. Aaron was born in Yarmouth county, Nova Scotia on May 19, 1850. He died June 10, 1920 at the age of 70 and is now buried at Darling Lake, Nova Scotia -- not too far from the house. He originally named the house "The Anchorage", but it later became known as the "Churchill Mansion".

Aaron Churchill moved from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia to Savannah, Georgia in 1874 at the age of 24. He also married his wife, Lois, the same year. Within a short time frame he started the "Churchill Steamship Line", and went on to become a principle shareholder in numerous southern cotton plantations in the United States. He was also known for inventing the cotton baling press that saved the industry many millions of dollars. He was known as being among the wealthiest Nova Scotians, resident in the United States.

An author by the name of Archibald MacMechan in his book "At the Harbour Mouth" said about Aaron Churchill:

"he had already been two years at sea, and he was second in command by
virtue of his ability, and not by any Board of Trade certificate."

Captain Aaron Churchill was also known as "Rudder" and "the famous sea captain". Yet adding to his famous list of heroic deeds (mostly when at sea), he received public recognition from the authorities for his great assistance rendered to victims of the 1971 Halifax Explosion. Three years later he died in Savannah, Georgia. His body was accompanied by Lois and Lottie on a ship back home to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia where he is now buried.

On July 4, 1874 at the age of 24, he married his cousin, Lois, who was eight months older than him. They had no children. Lois was born Sept 27, 1849 and died in 1928 at the age of 79. She was 71 when Aaron died. His neice, Lotta May Churchill (a.k.a. "Lottie"), was born May 18, 1885 and died May 24, 1971 at the age of 86. Lottie was 35 when Aaron died. She married Armand Rainey.

The ownership of the house went to his wife, Lois, when he died. Seven years later on July 14, 1927 the ownership went from Lois to Lottie. Lois died the following year at the age of 79. A business man purchased it in 1972, just over a year after Lottie died. Then, on April 3, 1981 it was purchased by Bob, and he still owns it today...
